Dr. Yuri Bolshan is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Ontario Tech University since 2017, previously serving as Assistant Professor (2012–2017). His research focuses on organic and medicinal chemistry, emphasizing Brønsted acid-catalyzed reactions, metal-free methodologies, and the synthesis of biologically active molecules. He holds a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the University of Toronto (2008) and a B.Sc. in Chemistry from the University of Waterloo (2003). Postdoctoral training includes the Structural Genomics Consortium (2010–2012) and the University of Tokyo (2008–2010).
His lab actively develops novel synthetic methods, particularly leveraging trifluoroborate salts and green chemistry principles. Key areas include catalytic alkenylation/alkynylation reactions, arylation processes, and natural product derivatization. Students under his supervision have explored diverse projects, with recent milestones including successful thesis defenses and conference presentations on topics like opioid bromination and flavone synthesis.
Dr. Bolshan collaborates widely, contributing to drug discovery initiatives and structural biology projects. He mentors both undergraduate and graduate students, offering opportunities in medicinal chemistry and organic synthesis. The lab actively recruits MSc/PhD candidates interested in advancing chemical methodologies and their applications in drug development.
