Hendrik Schmitt is a PhD student in the group of Prof. Stefano Morandi at the ETH Zurich, Switzerland, affiliated with the Laboratory of Organic Chemistry (LOC). His research focuses on synthetic organic chemistry and catalytic methodologies. Prior to his PhD, he earned a Master's degree in Chemistry from ETH Zurich (2015-2017) and a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry from TU Munich, Germany (2012-2015). He completed his Master’s thesis under Dr. Robert J. Phipps at the University of Cambridge (2016-2017) and an industrial internship at Syngenta (2020).
His research interests include the development of novel catalytic reactions, particularly involving palladium and other transition metals, as well as the synthesis of heterocyclic compounds and site-selective cross-coupling strategies. Recent work has explored regiodivergent ring-expansion reactions, deoxygenative arylation, and ligand design for enhanced catalytic selectivity.
Key publications highlight advancements in palladium-catalyzed methodologies and cross-coupling reactions, contributing to the field of organic synthesis. His lab, LOC, is part of the Department of Chemistry and Applied Biosciences at ETH Zurich.
