Yun-chien Chang is the Jack G. Clarke Professor in East Asian Law at Cornell Law School and Director of the Clarke Program in East Asian Law & Culture. He is also Core Faculty at Cornell East Asia Program and a Field Faculty in the Department of Statistics and Data Science at Cornell University. His research focuses on empirical, comparative, and economic analysis of private law (especially property law), judicial systems, and legal origins. He has authored over 20 books and 160 articles/chapters.
Research Interests:
- Economic analysis of law, particularly property rights and corporate governance
- Empirical studies of judicial behavior and legal systems
- Comparative legal methodologies across jurisdictions
- Cultural influences on legal practices (e.g., colonial legacies)
- Machine learning applications in legal research
Articles Trends: Recent work explores litigation dynamics, judicial panel effects, gender biases in inheritance, and the intersection of AI with human rights law. His 2023–2024 studies analyze property law reforms, legal aid participation, and cross-jurisdictional comparisons of 129+ countries.
Advising & Labs: Directs the East Asian Legal Program and collaborates with interdisciplinary teams in statistics. His work bridges law, data science, and empirical social sciences.
