Yuliya Hilevych is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Economic and Social History at the University of Groningen. Her research focuses on social and demographic history, particularly gender, sexuality, reproduction, depopulation, and social welfare policies in Eastern and Western Europe. She leads the ERC StG project DEPOP (2024–2028), analyzing depopulation and community welfare in Europe since 1950. She holds a PhD in Sociology from Wageningen University and Radboud University, with prior roles including British Academy Newton International Fellow at the University of Cambridge and Senior Lecturer at the University of Lincoln.

Research Interests: Her work examines 20th–21st century Eastern Europe, with special attention to Ukraine's demographic challenges. She explores how gender roles, state policies, and lived experiences shape population trends. Recent projects include studies on infertility counseling in postwar Europe and the sociohistorical impacts of armed conflict on fertility in Ukraine.

Teaching & Grants: She teaches courses on Eastern European history and has secured grants from the Netherlands Interdisciplinary Demographic Institute (NIDI) and the Dutch Ministry of Security and Justice. Her work also engages with UNFPA and the Centre for Urban History of East Central Europe.
Labs & Teams: Leads the DEPOP research group and collaborates with the 'Global Experiences of Gender' network at Oxford, focusing on care crises and gendered responses to demographic challenges.
