Dr. Yuanyuan Chen serves as Senior Lecturer in History & Theory of Animation at Ulster University's Belfast School of Art, where she also co-directs the BDes (Hons) Animation program. Her academic journey includes a PhD in Film Studies from University College Cork (2015), MA in Digital Art Design, and BA in Art Design.
Her research specializes in contemporary Chinese animation with particular focus on modernism/postmodernism influences since the 1980s, Shanghai Animation Film Studio's history, and East Asian cinema. She actively explores experimental animation, non-fiction animation, and emerging VR/AR animation technologies. Her scholarly work appears in journals like Modernism/modernity and Alphaville: Journal of Film and Screen Media, with a forthcoming monograph on Shanghai Animation Film Studio contracted with Edinburgh University Press.
Chen has supervised multiple PhD candidates including DfE-funded researcher Dara Flanagan examining LGBTQIA+ representation through animation. Her recent publications analyze Northern Ireland's animation industry post-Good Friday Agreement and Chinese streaming platform interaction models. She contributes to the UN Sustainable Development Goals through cultural projects like the AHRC-funded Green Transition Ecosystem initiative.
As Editorial Board member of Alphaville and co-founder of BAFTSS Animation SIG, she regularly peer-reviews for top journals including Animation: An Interdisciplinary Journal. Her international engagements include guest lectures at Waseda University (Japan) and external examiner roles at Letterkenny Institute of Technology.
