Yu Yao is an Associate Professor in the School of Electrical, Computer, and Energy Engineering at Arizona State University (ASU), part of the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering. She holds a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Princeton University (2011), and bachelor's/master's degrees from Tsinghua University. Her research focuses on nanophotonics, semiconductor nanostructures, and mid-infrared technologies, with applications in optoelectronics, biomedical devices, and energy systems. She leads the Yao Group and has authored over 30 peer-reviewed publications.

Her work spans lab-to-field applications, including autonomous solar field inspection using polarimetric drones and mid-infrared tissue sealing technologies. She collaborates with industry partners on additive manufacturing and anti-counterfeiting solutions using metal nanostructures.
