Young-mee Yu Cho is a Professor of Korean Language and Culture at Rutgers University's School of Arts and Sciences. She specializes in Korean linguistics, foreign language education, and translation studies.
- Ph.D. in Linguistics, Stanford University
- B.A. in English, Seoul National University
Research interests include:
- Korean phonology (syllable structure, laryngeal contrasts)
- Pragmatics of honorifics in Asian linguistics
- Korean as a Foreign Language (KFL) pedagogy
- Translation of Korean humanities works
- Digital archiving of Korean historical materials
Her publications span phonology, pedagogy, and translation projects, with a focus on Korean heritage learners and interdisciplinary approaches to language education. Recent work includes the DITTA Korean Humanities Translation Series and digital archives of the William Elliot Griffis Collection.
Scientific awards include:
- 31st Sejong Presidential Award (2012)
- Korean American Day Honoree (2021)
- The 2020 Excellent Scholarly Publication Award
- Multiple grants from Korea Foundation, Tuttle, and JSPS
She has led Korean curriculum development nationally and currently chairs the Humanities Plus Initiative at Rutgers.
