Young-a Park is an Associate Professor and Graduate Chair of the Asian Studies Program at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. She holds a Ph.D. in Anthropology from Harvard University (2006), an M.A. from Seoul National University (1995), and a B.A. from Seoul National University (1993).

Her research focuses on Korean film industry dynamics, North Korean refugees' cultural integration in South Korea, and transnational migrant identities. Her award-winning book Unexpected Alliances (2015) examines the interplay between independent filmmakers, the state, and the film industry during South Korea's post-authoritarian transition. Current projects include ethnographic studies of North Korean defectors' identity formation and cultural strategies in neoliberal South Korea.
Her articles explore themes like urban poverty representation in Korean cinema and North Korean migrant integration. She teaches courses on Korean history, cinema, and transnational studies.
