معرفی
Yoshua Bengio is a Professor at the University of Montreal and serves as the Scientific Director of Mila (Quebec's Artificial Intelligence Institute) and IVADO (the Institute for Data Valorization). He is also Co-director of CIFAR's Learning in Machines and Brains program alongside Yann LeCun.
Bengio is one of the "godfathers of AI" and a pioneer in the field of deep learning. His research spans multiple areas of artificial intelligence with a particular focus on neural networks and their applications. He has made groundbreaking contributions to probabilistic models of sequences, high-dimensional word embeddings, attention mechanisms, and generative adversarial networks. His work has had significant societal impact, with deep learning techniques now being used in smartphones for speech recognition, image labeling, preference matching, and language translation. Deep learning is also being applied broadly across science, engineering, commerce, and healthcare.
Bengio has received numerous prestigious awards for his contributions to computer science:
- ACM A.M. Turing Award (2018)
- ACM Fellow (2023)
- Officer of the Order of Canada
- Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada
- Marie-Victorin Prize
Bengio has advised numerous students who have gone on to make significant contributions to the field of AI. His most notable student is Ian Goodfellow, with whom he collaborated on Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs). Through Mila, Bengio has secured substantial research funding and established Montreal as a global hub for AI research, attracting major companies and fostering AI startups.
Mila, under Bengio's scientific direction, has grown to become the largest academic center for deep learning research in the world, with 300 researchers and 35 faculty members. The institute plays a crucial role in advancing AI research and translating it into practical applications across various domains.
