Yoshie Sano is a Professor and Academic Director of the CAHNRS Vancouver Campus at Washington State University (WSU), affiliated with the Department of Human Development within the College of Agricultural, Human, and Natural Resource Sciences. She holds a PhD in Human Development and Family Sciences from Oregon State University (2005) and a Master of Arts in Psychology from the University of Oregon (1997).
Her research focuses on family well-being in low-income rural communities, emphasizing food security, health disparities, and family health contexts. Key projects include the multi-state longitudinal study Rural Families Speak about Health and the Core Health Message Project, which develop culturally appropriate health resources for marginalized populations. She teaches courses on human development and research methodologies at WSU’s Vancouver campus.
Dr. Sano’s work bridges academic research and community engagement, addressing systemic challenges faced by rural families. Her publications span journals like Journal of Family and Economic Issues, Health Communication, and Family & Community Health, with a focus on maternal health, intergenerational family dynamics, and policy interventions.
Her research interests extend to transnational families, grandparent roles in multigenerational households, and the intersection of health literacy with depressive symptoms. She collaborates with organizations to disseminate practical solutions for improving rural family resilience through evidence-based strategies.
