Yong Lu, Ph.D., is a Professor of Anatomy and Neurobiology at Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED). He has been a faculty member since 2005 and leads research on auditory neuroscience, focusing on neuromodulatory mechanisms in hearing physiology and hearing disorders. His work employs electrophysiological and optical imaging techniques to study synaptic transmission and neural circuits in the auditory brainstem.
Dr. Lu earned his Ph.D. in Biology from the University of Missouri-Columbia (1999), following M.S. (1992) and B.S. (1989) degrees in Biology from Beijing Normal University. He completed postdoctoral training at the University of Washington under Dr. Edwin Rubel, focusing on ion channel regulation in auditory neurons.
His research interests include glutamatergic and GABAergic neurotransmission, synaptic plasticity, and mechanisms underlying auditory processing deficits in disorders like Fragile X syndrome. Key contributions involve elucidating how metabotropic glutamate receptors modulate inhibitory and excitatory synapses in auditory circuits.
Recent studies highlight his exploration of calcium's role in neuronal excitability, synaptic release mechanisms, and sound localization pathways in avian and mammalian models. His findings contribute to understanding therapeutic targets for hearing disorders.
