Jeffrey Mellott, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor of Anatomy and Neurobiology at Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED). His primary affiliation is with the College of Medicine, where he contributes to medical neuroscience education and auditory neurobiology research. Dr. Mellott holds a Ph.D. in Applied Cognition and Neuroscience from the University of Texas at Dallas (2008), preceded by an M.S. (2003) and B.S. (2001) in Neuroscience from the same institution. He completed postdoctoral training at the University of California Berkeley and NEOMED.
His research focuses on understanding age-related changes in auditory neural circuits, particularly how GABAergic systems contribute to hearing loss. Using advanced techniques like immunohistochemistry, electron microscopy, and viral tract-tracing, his lab investigates synaptic changes in the inferior colliculus and cochlear nucleus. His work has been supported by an NIH/NIDCD R01 grant since 2020.
Dr. Mellott is a member of NEOMED's Hearing Research Group, comprising 10 labs and 12 faculty members studying hearing and communication. He leads the Electron Microscope Lab and serves on academic committees such as the University Faculty Council and College of Medicine Admissions Committee. His research has produced over 30 peer-reviewed articles, with recent work exploring perineuronal nets, cholinergic projections, and GABAergic synapse dynamics in aging models.
