Dr. Yonatan Mendel is a faculty member in the Department of Middle East Studies at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (BGU), within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. His academic journey includes a Ph.D. from Cambridge University and post-doctoral work at BGU and Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

Research Focus: Dr. Mendel examines the intersection of language and society, particularly the role of Arabic in Israel over the past century. His work analyzes Jewish-Arab relations, ideological formations in Jewish society, and power dynamics through linguistic attitudes, education, and translation practices. He also explores how Arabic studies reflect broader political and social processes in the Middle East.
Contributions Beyond Academia: Dr. Mendel co-founded the Maktoob book series, dedicated to translating Arab literature into Hebrew, and has personally translated two Arabic novels. He is also a founding member of an Israeli fan group for Norwich City Football Club.
