Associate Professor Yoga Nathan serves as Senior Lecturer in Medical Education at the University of Limerick's School of Medicine, specializing in Problem-Based Learning (PBL) facilitation for Graduate Entry Medical students across all four years. His career bridges clinical practice, public health research, and medical education development since joining UL in 2008.
Education:
- Pre-University Examination, University of Madras, India (1966-67)

Research Focus: Dr. Nathan investigates psychosocial and biological determinants of illness through health needs assessments, refugee health studies, and palliative care frameworks. His work examines health inequalities, deprivation metrics, and health impact assessments using mixed-methods approaches, with significant contributions to understanding mental health in youth and medical education pedagogy.
Publication Trends: Recent work (2013-2015) reveals dual trajectories: neuroimaging studies linking cardio-metabolic risks to brain structure (via pSoBid data), and public health investigations into student STI awareness and mental health service barriers. Medical education research forms a distinct thread analyzing psychology integration in curricula through student attitude studies.
Scientific Recognition:
- MP Shah Award for best MPH student (non-EEC)
Professional Contributions: As inaugural coordinator of UCC's Masters in Public Health program (2008-2010) and pSoBid project manager in Glasgow, he bridges research and practice. Current PBL tutoring for 100+ medical students annually demonstrates commitment to experiential learning, while UN Sustainable Development Goal alignment underscores global health relevance.
Collaborative Networks: Active in Glasgow Centre for Population Health legacy projects and UL's medical education team, he maintains cross-institutional ties with University College Cork and UK-based professional bodies including the Faculty of Public Health.
