Dr. Ying Xian is a tenured Associate Professor in the Department of Neurology at UT Southwestern Medical Center, specializing in improving healthcare quality and outcomes for patients with cardiovascular disease and stroke. He joined UT Southwestern in 2021 after serving as clinical lead for the AHA/ASA Get With The Guidelines Stroke Registry and STS National Database Analytical Center at Duke University. His research focuses on comparative effectiveness, patient-centered outcomes, and antithrombotic therapy for secondary stroke prevention and dementia.
Education: M.D. from Beijing Medical University (Peking University Health Science Center), residency at Peking University People’s Hospital, and Ph.D. in Health Services Research from the University of Rochester. He also completed a fellowship in Cardiology at Fuwai Hospital and a Cardiovascular Outcomes Research fellowship at Duke University.
Research Interests: Stroke care quality improvement, anticoagulant therapy in stroke patients, post-stroke dementia, and large-scale registry analyses. He leads multiple NIH-funded R01 grants and AHA awards, evaluating therapies and outcomes for acute stroke management.
Notable Achievements: Principal Investigator of National Institute on Aging (NIA) R01 grants, recipient of the AHA QCOR Young Investigator Award and Northwestern Junior Faculty Award. His work has informed stroke guidelines and improved care at over 2,800 U.S. hospitals through the GWTG-Stroke program.
Advising & Grants: PI of NIA-funded studies on antithrombotic therapies and post-stroke dementia, and AHA grants on off-label thrombolytic use. Serves on AHA/ASA committees including the Stroke Council and GWTG Clinical Work Group.
Labs/Teams: Director of the Xian Lab, focused on stroke quality improvement and translational research. Collaborates with interdisciplinary teams on registries and clinical trials to advance stroke care.
