Yichun Liu serves as the Kenzo Tange Design Critic in Architecture at Harvard University's Graduate School of Design and holds visiting professorships at Tongji University and Southeast University. As founding principal of Shanghai-based Atelier Deshaus—the earliest independent architectural practice in China—he is internationally recognized for context-sensitive responses to China's rapid urbanization through transformative projects on former industrial sites along the Huangpu River.
His research centers on urban design and adaptive reuse, examining how structural interventions reframe spatial memory and regenerate public life in post-industrial landscapes. Signature works like the Long Museum West Bund and 80,000-ton Silo Art Center demonstrate his approach to revitalizing riverfront heritage sites, while his Fall 2025 Harvard studio Post-Rural Futures investigates design strategies for evolving rural contexts beyond traditional village structures.
Liu has received top honors including the AR Emerging Architecture Award, AIA China Honor Award, and 2023 Architecture China Award for Practice. His work has been exhibited globally at MoMA, Centre Pompidou, RIBA, and MAK Vienna, with solo shows in London (2022) and Berlin (2023).
