Yiching Wu is an Associate Professor at the University of Toronto, holding dual appointments in the Asian Institute and the Department of East Asian Studies. His research focuses on the history, society, and politics of Mao’s China, particularly the Cultural Revolution. Trained at the University of Chicago, Wu employs historical anthropology and critical social theory to examine themes such as populism, social protest, and the politics of historical knowledge.
His current projects explore the demobilization of Cultural Revolution mass politics and Mao’s contradictory role during this period. Key scholarly contributions include The Cultural Revolution at the Margins (Harvard UP, 2014), awarded the 2013 President’s Book Award by the Social Science History Association. His work spans postsocialism, comparative revolutionary studies, and the critique of capitalist restoration narratives.
Publications address topics like state enumeration in Mao’s China, the Shengwulian episode, and genealogical inquiries into revolutionary discourse. Wu’s interdisciplinary approach bridges anthropology, sociology, and Marxist historiography, offering critical insights into China’s modern political trajectory.
