Yichen Su is a transportation designer and researcher at the Intelligent Mobility Design Centre (IMDC) within the School of Design at the Royal College of Art. Specializing in 3D modelling & visualisation and intelligent mobility, Yichen focuses on visualizing future mobility concepts and designing vehicles within these visionary frameworks.
Yichen's research explores how different vehicles' societal roles influence their design philosophy, with particular emphasis on autonomous mobility systems. Their work addresses both technical challenges in reimagining traditional automotive architecture and humanistic considerations including human-machine communication, new aesthetic paradigms for autonomous vehicles, and building user trust in automated systems. Yichen brings unique perspective from being an avid cyclist in both London and Shanghai, providing valuable 'outside of vehicle' insights into traffic dynamics.
Notable research includes the 2022 MA Intelligent Mobility thesis project "Safety via Intelligence," which investigates methods to enhance user trust and experience with less crash-proof autonomous vehicles in a near-future crash-free environment while exploring innovative aesthetics for active safety vehicles. Yichen has also contributed to practical industry projects such as the Transport for London bus cab redesign initiative focused on creating comfortable, inclusive, and user-friendly designs to better support drivers.
Prior to joining IMDC, Yichen gained diverse industry experience through internships at car OEMs, bicycle manufacturers, design consultancies, and smaller studios. These experiences spanned multiple vehicle categories including delivery robots, bicycles, and agricultural machinery, providing comprehensive understanding of non-automotive vehicle design principles and user requirements.
