Jacques Terken is an Associate Professor in the Industrial Design Department at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), affiliated with the Future Everyday research cluster. His work focuses on automotive human factors, particularly user experience in autonomous vehicles and interaction between autonomous systems and road users. He leads the iCave project, investigating communication strategies between autonomous vehicles and pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers of non-automated vehicles.
Academically, Terken holds a PhD from Leiden University (1985) and a specialization in Cognitive Psychology/Psycholinguistics from Utrecht University (1979). His career includes research at the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics and the Institute for Perception Research (IPO). He co-founded the User-Centered Engineering group, now part of TU/e's Industrial Design department. His research spans speech technology, user-centered design methods, and automotive human factors.
Terken has authored/co-authored over 140 scientific papers, with recent contributions focusing on automated driving, generative design methods, and interaction design theory. He actively supervises PhD projects in automotive human factors. Current research emphasizes improving safety and trust in autonomous vehicle systems through enhanced communication mechanisms with road users.
