Yi-Hui Zhou

Yi-Hui Zhou serves as an Associate Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at North Carolina State University and is a member of the Bioinformatics Research Center. Appointed in July 2018 as a Chancellor’s Faculty Excellence Program connective cluster member in the High-Dimensional Integration of Biological Systems cluster, she contributes to interdisciplinary research at the intersection of statistics and genomics.

Her educational background includes:

• Master's degree in Applied Mathematics from the University of Maryland
• Ph.D. in Biostatistics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

Dr. Zhou specializes in developing statistical methodologies for high-dimensional genomic data, with core expertise in statistical genetics and generalized linear models. Her research addresses critical challenges in analyzing modern genomics technologies where data dimensionality far exceeds sample sizes, focusing particularly on optimization of next-generation and third-generation sequencing models. This work bridges theoretical statistics with practical applications in biological data interpretation.

Dr. Zhou has secured primary funding from the National Human Genome Research Institute and Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, while serving as co-investigator on multiple National Institutes of Health and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency grants. She mentors graduate and undergraduate students across diverse academic disciplines including bioinformatics and engineering. As associate director of outreach for the Bioinformatics Research Center, she facilitates collaborative networks with local and national researchers in biological sciences and bioinformatics.

She actively participates in the High-dimensional Integration of Biological Systems cluster, which enhances interdisciplinary faculty collaborations under the Chancellor’s Faculty Excellence Program to advance research in complex biological data systems.
