Yesim Kakalic is a Researcher at The Alan Turing Institute, focusing on Participatory AI and Data Justice. She holds a PhD in Applied Linguistics from the University of Warwick (2022), supervised by Prof Stephanie Schnurr and Prof Steve Mann. Her work examines identity construction, social integration, and migration through a critical discourse analysis lens.

Research Interests: Kakalic’s research explores the intersection of identity, migration, and sociolinguistics, particularly among German-Turkish communities. She investigates how humor and discourse challenge dominant narratives of social integration. Recent projects include studying Privacy-Enhancing Technologies (PETs) in finance and the gendering of professional mobility among non-elite immigrants.
Awards: IAS Early Career Fellowship (2022), AFHEA (2022).
Teaching & Grants: Supervised 5 Master’s dissertations and taught modules in Spoken Interaction, Research Methods, and Intercultural Communication at the University of Warwick. Active in organizing conferences like WICAL and MITN.
Labs/Teams: Part of the FAIR Project at The Alan Turing Institute, exploring ethical AI in finance. Collaborates with interdisciplinary networks on migration, borders, and academic mobilities.
