Yelena Baraz is the Kennedy Foundation Professor of Latin Language and Literature and Director of the Society of Fellows in the Liberal Arts at Princeton University. She specializes in Latin literature, Roman cultural history, and the history of ideas, with a focus on how literary texts interact with social and cultural forces.
- Education: Ph.D. from UC Berkeley (2004)
- Appointments: Jonathan Edwards Bicentennial Preceptorship at Princeton, former APA-NEH Postdoctoral Fellow (2004-2005)
Her research explores Roman literature and its socio-political contexts, including philosophical works under Caesar’s dictatorship and the evolution of pride in Latin texts. She is currently working on post-Vergilian pastoral, a translation of Ovid’s Metamorphoses (with Jhumpa Lahiri), and a Very Short Introduction to Cicero’s works.
She has received the President's Distinguished Teaching Award and contributes to lexicographical projects like the Thesaurus Linguae Latinae. Her teaching spans Latin language courses to graduate seminars on Seneca, Vergil, and Roman epistolography.
