Yao Wang is a Professor at NYU Tandon School of Engineering, holding joint appointments in Electrical and Computer Engineering and Biomedical Engineering, with an affiliated position in NYU School of Medicine’s Radiology Department. She serves as Vice Dean for Faculty Affairs and previously held roles including Speaker of the NYU Tandon Faculty (2017–2019). Her research focuses on video processing, medical imaging, and machine learning, supported by grants from NSF and NIH.
- Education: B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Electronic Engineering (Tsinghua University, 1983–1985); Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering (UC Santa Barbara, 1990).

Her research interests include video compression, medical imaging applications, and neural decoding. Key contributions include the textbook Video Processing and Communications and advancements in AR/VR streaming efficiency. Awards include IEEE Fellow (2004), NYC Mayor’s Excellence Award (2000), and China’s Yangtze River Lecture Scholar (2007).
Her work on adaptive point cloud streaming reduces bandwidth by 7x, while NSF-funded projects address edge computing for mobile analytics. She collaborates widely, mentoring students in fields like neural networks and healthcare technology.
