Elza Erkip is a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at NYU Tandon School of Engineering. She is affiliated with the Center for Advanced Technology in Telecommunications (CATT) and NYU WIRELESS, focusing on 6G wireless technologies and terahertz communication systems.

Dr. Erkip specializes in information theory, communication theory, and wireless communications. Her recent research explores analytics-aware data compression using low-complexity deep neural networks (DNNs) for resource-constrained mobile and IoT devices. This work aims to optimize transmission rates and analytics accuracy while adapting to dynamic wireless channel conditions through DNN pruning and adaptive architectures.
This NSF-funded project (2020-2024) with collaborators Siddharth Garg and Yao Wang seeks to reduce bandwidth costs by developing compression algorithms that retain only critical data for analysis, rather than full image reproduction. The research promises extended mobile device battery life and more efficient wireless spectrum utilization.

Dr. Erkip serves as Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Information Theory and chairs the IEEE Communications Society Communication Theory Technical Committee. She previously organized major conferences including IEEE Communication Theory Workshop (2024) and IEEE International Symposium of Information Theory (2013). Her laboratory, the Communication and Information Theory (CommIT) Group, collaborates with NYU WIRELESS and CATT on next-generation wireless systems.
