Yann le Polain de Waroux is an Associate Professor in the Department of Geography at McGill University, affiliated with the Institute for the Study of International Development. His research focuses on land-use change, environmental sustainability, and development dynamics in Latin America’s agricultural frontiers, particularly the Gran Chaco region. He holds a PhD from Université Catholique de Louvain (2012) and completed postdoctoral work at Stanford University’s Woods Institute.
His work examines the intersection of commodity agriculture expansion, smallholder livelihoods, and cultural factors influencing land use. Key themes include:
- Commodity Frontiers: Analyzing how capitalized agriculture drives deforestation and social inequity in Paraguay, Argentina, and Bolivia
- Cultural Influences: Studying Mennonite communities to understand how cultural norms shape land-use decisions
- Resilience Strategies: Mapping how marginalized groups adapt to frontier dynamics
Recent publications highlight frontier metrics, water access disparities, and the role of culture in land systems. His LENDEV Lab (Land, Environment & Development) fosters interdisciplinary research on global South development challenges.
