Yann Chen (they/them) is a Visiting Assistant Professor of German at St. Olaf College, with teaching experience at multiple universities including the University of Missouri, University of Arkansas, University of Arizona, and University of Oregon. They previously served as a US Teaching Assistant in Graz, Austria.
- Ph.D. in Transcultural German Studies from the University of Arizona and Dr. Phil. from Universität Leipzig (2021)
- M.A. in Germanic Languages and Literatures from the University of Oregon (2013)
- B.A. in European Studies/German Studies from the University of California, Irvine (2011)
Chen's research focuses on West German terrorist group Rote Armee Fraktion's propaganda texts through lenses of Critical Security Studies, Narrative Theory, and Performativity. Additional interests span German cinematic history, music video pedagogy, Brechtian theater, and East German punk culture. Their publications analyze heterotopian spaces in punk contexts and racial discourse in German hip-hop media.
At St. Olaf, they teach courses ranging from language fundamentals (GERM 111/112/231) to specialized topics including German fairy tales (GERM 247), film history (GERM 249), memory studies (GERM 251), and contemporary Germany (GERM 252). Their office hours are structured with both scheduled drop-in times and appointment availability.
