Yann Bugeaud is a Professor of Mathematics at the University of Strasbourg, where he works in the Department of Mathematics at IRMA (Institute for Advanced Mathematical Research, UMR 7501). He holds prestigious appointments as a member of the University Institute of France (2021-2026), Director of the Grand Est region's mathematics research federation MaGE, and elected member of section 25 of the National Council of Universities (2023-2027 term). Previously, he served as Director of IRMA from 2013 to 2018 and was also a member of the University Institute of France from 2008 to 2013.
His research focuses on Diophantine approximation, Diophantine equations, transcendence theory, and modulo one distribution. Bugeaud has made significant contributions to understanding continued fractions, p-adic analysis, and the approximation properties of algebraic numbers. His work often intersects with combinatorics on words, particularly studying sequences like Thue-Morse and Sturmian words. His research program spans both theoretical developments and effective bounds in number theory, with applications to solving Diophantine equations.
Bugeaud serves on the editorial boards of numerous prestigious mathematics journals including
- Acta Arithmetica (since 2020)
- International Journal of Number Theory (since 2016)
- Bulletin and Mémoires de la société mathématique de France (since 2015)
- Journal de théorie des nombres de Bordeaux (since 2012)
- Moscow Journal of Combinatorics and Number Theory (since 2011)
- Uniform Distribution Theory (since 2008)
His recent work shows a continued focus on advancing the understanding of Diophantine approximation through multiple lenses: p-adic analysis, continued fractions, and connections to combinatorics on words. The research spans both theoretical developments and effective bounds with applications to solving Diophantine equations. His work on Thue-Morse sequences, Sturmian words, and continued fractions reveals deep connections between combinatorial structures and number-theoretic properties.
