Dr. Yang Yang is a Space Engineering Lecturer at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), specifically within the School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering. He completed his PhD in Space Engineering in 2015 and has held academic positions at prestigious institutions including RMIT University, Sun Yat-sen University, and The University of Sydney before joining UNSW.
His educational background includes a PhD in Space Engineering (2015) with subsequent academic appointments across Australia and China. Dr. Yang has developed significant expertise in teaching and research within Space Engineering through his academic engagements at multiple prestigious institutions.
Dr. Yang's research focuses on astrodynamics and space situational awareness, with particular emphasis on unraveling behaviors of Resident Space Objects through tracking data analysis. His work spans nonlinear/non-Gaussian filtering/estimation, data association, GNSS measurement processing, and precise orbit determination. Currently, he is immersed in data inference to quantify behavioral essence of RSOs and advancing emerging Positioning, Navigation & Timing applications within the cislunar environment. His research serves as a catalyst bridging academia and industry to propel the future of enhanced space traffic management.
Dr. Yang has secured multiple competitive research grants including 'Pattern of Life Identification for Geosynchronous Satellites Using Transformer-based AI Foundation Models' (2025-2026), 'Passage Prediction for Mega-Constellation Satellites' (2023-2024), and 'Revolutionising Space Tracking Sensor Network Management' (2023).

Dr. Yang actively supervises a diverse group of research students across various levels including PhD candidates, MPhil students, and Honours projects. His current supervision spans topics from cislunar orbit propagators to satellite maneuver characterization. He teaches courses including AERO9500 - Satellite Systems Architectures and Orbits and AERO9610 - The Space Segment, contributing significantly to space engineering education at UNSW.
His laboratory work involves satellite tracking infrastructure, including upgrades to the Physics C14 Telescope for satellite tracking, and he leads research projects focused on space situational awareness and navigation systems.
