Yana Mancheva

Assoc. Prof. Yana Mancheva, PhD serves as Head of the Department of Korean Studies at Sofia University 'St. Kliment Ohridski' within the Faculty of Classical and Modern Philology. A graduate of the Korean Studies Program herself, she has led the department since 2019 after previously serving in other capacities.

Her academic expertise spans multiple dimensions of Korean studies, with particular focus on:

• Practical Korean language instruction
• Sino-Korean characters
• Modern and traditional Korean art and culture
• Religious and philosophical teachings in Korea

Dr. Mancheva has received specialized training at the Academy of Korean Studies in the Republic of Korea and Cité de la musique in France, enhancing her interdisciplinary approach to Korean studies. She has authored significant scholarly works including the monograph 'The role of scholars in the cultural and political life of traditional Korea' and a textbook on Sino-Korean characters.

As department head, she oversees Bachelor's, Master's, and Doctoral programs in Korean Studies, one of the most selective programs at Sofia University that prepares specialists fluent in Korean language with deep knowledge of Korean history, culture, and literature.
