Yana Bromberg is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology at Rutgers University, with an adjunct position in Genetics. She serves as Chief Scientific Officer at BioSof, a bioinformatics tool development company, and is a Fellow at the Technical University of Munich's Institute for Advanced Study (TUM-IAS). Her research focuses on functional genomics, metagenomics, and computational biology, particularly in understanding how genetic sequences encode biological functions. Key areas include microbial functional annotation, human genome variation analysis, and the evolution of electron transfer reactions.
Bromberg holds a B.S. in Biology and Computer Science from SUNY Stony Brook and a Ph.D. in Biomedical Informatics from Columbia University. She has received numerous accolades, including the NSF CAREER Award and the TUM-IAS Hans Fischer Fellowship. She actively contributes to the computational biology community through leadership roles in ISCB and editorial work for journals like BMC Genomics. Her lab develops tools like SNAP for predicting SNP impacts and HFSP for protein function annotation, advancing precision medicine and environmental microbiology research.
Research Interests:
Her work spans multiple dimensions of functional genomics:
- Microbial Metagenomics: Identifying emergent functionalities in microbiomes specific to environmental niches.
- Genome Variation: Linking genetic polymorphisms to phenotypic traits and disease predisposition.
- Computational Tools: Creating algorithms for SNP impact analysis, functional annotation, and evolutionary modeling.
- Evolutionary Biology: Tracing the origins of redox reactions and molecular functions across life's history.
Publications Overview: Bromberg's research highlights functional genomics applications, from refining protein function predictions using structural data to analyzing urban microbiomes. Her work bridges computational methods and biological insights, addressing challenges in precision medicine and environmental science.
Awards & Recognition:
