Yan Liang is a Professor of Earth, Environmental, and Planetary Sciences at Brown University, where he has been a faculty member since 1998. His academic journey includes a B.Sc. from Peking University (1984), an M.Sc. from the University of Houston (1989), and a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago (1994). His research focuses on mantle petrology, geochemical kinetics, and planetary processes, with emphasis on trace element partitioning, diffusion in silicates, and melt-rock interactions. He holds affiliations with the American Geophysical Union, the Geochemical Society, and the Mineralogical Society of America.
Research interests include (1) partial melting and melt migration dynamics in heterogeneous mantles, (2) trace element partitioning in minerals and melts, (3) diffusion in melts and solids, and (4) lunar petrology. Key contributions include developing the REE-in-two-pyroxene thermometer and models for mantle heterogeneity effects on trace element signatures.
Notable grants include NSF funding for mantle thermal history studies and NASA support for Martian geochemistry research. He advises graduate students such as Noah Hooper and has mentored over a dozen doctoral candidates, including Zachary Morgan and Chenguang Sun. His work bridges experimental petrology with numerical modeling to address planetary-scale processes.
Liang’s publications span experimental studies, geochemical modeling, and field observations, with over 70 peer-reviewed articles. His lab focuses on mantle dynamics and melt-rock reaction mechanisms, contributing to understanding Earth’s lithospheric evolution and planetary formation processes.
