Yan Hamel is a Professor in the Department of Humanities, Letters and Communications at TÉLUQ University, specializing in twentieth-century French literature with expertise in Marcel Proust, Jean-Paul Sartre, sociocriticism, and collective memory studies.
His educational background includes a Postdoctorate in French from the University of Ottawa, a Doctorate in French Studies from the University of Montreal, a Master's degree in Literature from Laval University, and a Bachelor's degree in French literature from Laval University.
Professor Hamel's research centers on sociocriticism of texts, currently leading the funded project "Memories against the Third Republic: The Critique of the French National Past in Marcel Proust's In Search of Lost Time," which examines memorial polyphony in novels. This builds upon his 2006 book "The Battle of Memories: The Second World War and the French Novel" and 2013 publication "L'Amérique selon Sartre." He has authored numerous articles in journals including Études françaises, Études littéraires, and Les Temps Modernes.
He serves as president of the North American Sartre Society and is affiliated with the Interuniversity Research Center in Sociocriticism of Texts.
