François Proulx is an Associate Professor of French and Italian at the University of Illinois. He holds a PhD from Harvard University and a BA (First-Class Honours) from McGill University. His research focuses on 19th- and 20th-century French literature, digital humanities, and Marcel Proust studies. He has published extensively on Proust’s manuscripts, letters, and drawings, including a 2019 book Victims of the Book, which explores reading and masculinity in fin-de-siècle France. His work has been recognized with awards like the NEH Fellowship and the Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Palmes académiques. Proulx also serves as an Associate Editor of Nineteenth-Century French Studies and co-directs the Corr-Proust digital edition project.
He has taught courses such as French 578: Marcel Proust and French 319: Quebec Literature and Film. Recent research includes collaborations on Proust’s correspondence with Caroline Szylowicz and contributions to special issues of L'Esprit Créateur. His interdisciplinary approach bridges literary analysis with digital humanities, influencing both academic and public scholarly discourse.
