Yan Bai

Yan Bai is a Professor of Economics and Chair of the Department of Economics at the University of Rochester. He holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Minnesota (2005). His research focuses on International Economics and Macroeconomics, with particular emphasis on financial frictions, sovereign debt dynamics, and trade policies. He teaches courses such as ECO 535 (Quantitative Macroeconomics), ECO 268 (Economics of Globalization), and ECO 510 (International Macroeconomics).

His research explores topics including sovereign default risk, financial integration, and the impacts of globalization. Notable contributions include analyzing the Feldstein-Horioka puzzle, sovereign debt renegotiation duration, and the effects of fiscal austerity during crises. His work frequently bridges theoretical macroeconomic frameworks with empirical applications in global economic systems.

Prof. Bai’s academic activities include serving as Chair of the Department of Economics, overseeing curricular development and faculty governance. His research has been published in top journals such as Econometrica, Journal of International Economics, and American Economic Review Papers and Proceedings. He maintains an active research agenda addressing contemporary challenges in international finance and macroeconomic policy design.
