Xavier Mateos-Planas

Xavier Mateos-Planas is a Professor at the School of Economics and Finance, Queen Mary University of London. He holds a PhD from Universitat Pompeu Fabra and has held senior positions at the University of Southampton and Stony Brook NY. His institutional roles include Director of International Programmes at SEF and membership on Queen Mary's Research Ethics Committee, with previous leadership as Co-Deputy Head of School and Director of Research at SEF.

Xavier's research focuses on quantitative macroeconomics, with specific interests in fiscal policy determination, credit frictions, sovereign debt, labour market inequality, and technology-development linkages. His recent work explores how credit frictions impact aggregate consumption, the macroeconomic effects of tax evasion as contingent debt, and the heterogeneity of sovereign debt defaults. Collaborative studies with Giulio Seccia and Berk Yavuzoglu examine trade credit dynamics and their role in amplifying economic fluctuations.

His 15 most recent publications span sovereign default, credit constraints, and fiscal policy, with methodological innovations in extreme value shocks and commitment models. He is associated with the Centre for Macroeconomics (CFM) and contributes to debates on state-contingent debt instruments and international debt restructuring.

Supervision includes current PhD students Rubaiya Zaman, Gabriel Bracons, Concetta Gigante and previously Osvaldo Pericon, Carlos Uribe, Nils Gudat, Chris Redl. His academic work has been presented at institutions like UCL and the 33rd Stony Brook International Conference on Game Theory.
