Yamuna Kaluarachchi

Yamuna Kaluarachchi is a Professor and Department Research Degrees Co-ordinator at the Manchester School of Architecture, Manchester Metropolitan University. She holds a BSc (First Class Honours) and MSc in Architecture from the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka, an MSc from the Bartlett School of Architecture (UCL), and a PhD from the University of Cambridge. Her research focuses on Smart and Green Cities, Urban Resilience, Disaster Risk Reduction, and Inclusion in Post-Disaster Recovery. She has led UKRI-funded projects, including ‘Gender and disability inclusion in Build Back Better Programmes’ and EPSRC grants on sustainable living for older communities. Her work has influenced housing policies and garnered awards such as the University of Greenwich Early Career Research Excellence Award.

Yamuna’s career includes roles as Associate Professor at London South Bank University, Reader at Kingston University, and Senior Research Fellow at the University of Greenwich. She mentors academic staff and PhD students, serves as an international PhD examiner, and contributes to university policies on teaching, research, and internationalisation. Her research spans global South contexts (Brazil, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Mozambique), emphasizing societal resilience, equality, and sustainable development.

Key projects include studies on stakeholder management in post-flood recovery (Sri Lanka), inclusive post-disaster policies, and smart adaptive homes. She has published widely in journals like Smart Cities, Sustainability, and Water, and collaborates with international networks to bridge research with real-world impact.

Awards and recognitions include the Highly Commended Green Guardian Award, Sustain Magazine Award, and Green Gown Award shortlist. Her work highlights the intersection of technology, sustainability, and equity in urban environments.
