Ya-xiang Yuan is a Professor at the Institute of Computational Mathematics and Scientific/Engineering Computing of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He earned his B.Sc. from Xiangtan University (1982) and Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge (1986) under M.J.D. Powell. His career includes leadership roles at Chinese Academy of Sciences institutions and international academic engagements.
- Education: B.Sc. in Mathematics (Xiangtan University, 1982), Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics (Cambridge, 1986).
His research focuses on Nonlinear Optimization, particularly Trust Region Algorithms and Quasi-Newton Methods. Over decades, he has advanced numerical optimization techniques, influencing both theoretical and applied domains.
He has supervised numerous Master’s and Ph.D. students, including notable advisees like Zaikun Zhang and Yong Xia. His scientific leadership is evidenced by awards such as the Shiing S. Chern Mathematics Award (2011), SIAM Fellow (2011), and Chinese Academy of Sciences member (2011). He has also held editorial roles for journals like Science China: Mathematics and SIAM Review.
