Dr. Ya-Yen Sun is an Associate Professor at the School of Business, Faculty of Business, Economics and Law at the University of Queensland (UQ). She joined UQ from Taiwan in 2018 and holds a PhD from Michigan State University. Dr. Sun is a leading researcher in tourism sustainability with a focus on economic impacts and environmental footprinting, having published in top academic journals including Nature Climate Change, Tourism Management, Journal of Travel Research and Journal of Sustainable Tourism.
Dr. Sun's research spans two primary areas:
- Tourism carbon/water footprint assessment: She evaluates, traces, and decomposes the carbon and water footprints of tourism at both macro and micro levels using input-output modeling techniques.
- Tourism economic impacts: Her work addresses how changes in national tourism policy, market development, or disasters impact GDP, employment, salary, and tax revenue, providing quantitative estimates for policymakers.
Her extensive publication record reveals a strong focus on quantifying tourism's environmental impact, particularly carbon emissions. Dr. Sun has pioneered methods to measure tourism's contribution to greenhouse gas emissions globally and has developed frameworks for tourism decarbonization. Her research combines economic modeling with environmental science to provide actionable insights for destinations worldwide.
Dr. Sun has secured significant research funding including:
- ARC Discovery Project (2021-2025): 'Reducing global tourism carbon emissions' (Lead CI)
- ARC Linkage Project (2021-2025): 'Reducing plate waste in hotels - which interventions are most effective?'
- Multiple past projects with international organizations including Statistics Norway, Indonesia Ministry of Finance, and the Research Council of Norway
She currently supervises PhD students and has previously completed supervision of a PhD on sustainable tourism interventions. Dr. Sun has worked closely with government agencies across multiple countries including Statistics Norway, Indonesia Ministry of Finance, Taiwan Ministry of the Interior Construction Agency, Taiwan Forestry Bureau, and the US National Park Service, ensuring her research has direct policy applications.
