Assoc Prof Maria Fernanda Adame is an Associate Professor and ARC Future Fellow at the Australian Rivers Institute, Griffith University. Her work focuses on wetland ecosystems' roles in carbon sequestration, water quality improvement, and coastal protection. She holds a PhD in Marine Sciences from the University of Queensland and a BSc from the National Autonomous University of Mexico. Her research emphasizes mangrove restoration, blue carbon projects, and sustainable management strategies.
Dr. Adame collaborates with government agencies, NGOs, and First Nations communities to develop practical solutions for wetland conservation. She has secured grants totaling over $2.5M, including the ARC Future Fellowship and Advance Queensland Industry Research Fellowship. Her research outputs include 126+ peer-reviewed articles, with key contributions to understanding nitrogen dynamics in tropical wetlands and mangrove carbon stocks.
- Education:
- Bachelor of Science (Biology), University of Navarra (2000)
- Master of Science, National Autonomous University of Mexico (2005)
- PhD in Marine Sciences, University of Queensland (Australia)
Her research interests span ecosystem services, climate action, and environmental rehabilitation. Notable projects include mangrove restoration in Mexico and Australia and assessing wetlands' role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Dr. Adame supervises doctoral students exploring topics like wetland restoration, mangrove wave breakers, and carbon footprints of green infrastructure. She also leads initiatives such as the Mangrove Restoration Tracker Tool and collaborative frameworks for cross-habitat restoration.
