Dr. Xuechen Chen is an Associate Professor in Politics and International Relations at Northeastern University London and Affiliate Faculty in the Department of Political Science at Northeastern University Boston (2023-2026). She also serves as Associate Director of Research and Knowledge Exchange for Social Sciences, holds a Visiting Research Fellowship at King’s College London’s London Asia-Pacific Centre for Social Science, and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (2020). Her expertise bridges International Relations and Area Studies, focusing on EU-Asia relations, China’s foreign policy, and cyber governance.
Dr. Chen’s research examines EU external policies toward the Asia-Pacific, China’s role in global cybersecurity, and norm diffusion mechanisms. Recent projects include analyzing China’s influence in cyberspace governance (funded by the British Academy/Leverhulme Grant) and interdisciplinary work on digital trade-security linkages at Northeastern University. She has published widely in journals like Journal of European Integration and Asia Europe Journal, with a 2024 Routledge monograph exploring EU-ASEAN normative interactions.
Teaching specialties include global politics, comparative politics, and research methods. She supervises PhD projects on AI governance and norm diffusion. Her research grants include Northeastern Tier 1 awards for projects like 'Reimagining Cyberspace Governance' (with Khoury College) and AI-driven narrative analysis (with CAMD).
Award-winning publications address EU-China trade dynamics, pandemic preparedness in East Asia, and cybersecurity contestation. Active in policy circles, she contributes to think tanks like UK in a Changing Europe and co-leads the UACES Digital-EU research network.
