Dr. Xue-Long Sun is a Professor at Cleveland State University, affiliated with the Center for Gene Regulation in Health and Disease (GRHD). His research laboratory focuses on Medicinal Chemistry, Chemical Biology, and Glycobiology, with specialized investigations into cell surface glycosylation patterns and biomimetic therapeutic strategies.
Research interests include:
- Developing chemical probes and enzyme inhibitors for sialylation/desialylation processes in immune cells
- Biomimetic synthesis of thrombomodulin conjugates for anticoagulant therapies
- Glycoligand-functionalized nanomaterials for biosensing and drug delivery applications
Analysis of recent publications reveals strong interdisciplinary focus spanning glycobiology, nanotechnology, and virology. Key themes include:
- Sialidase inhibitors and glycosylation mechanisms in viral infections (especially SARS-CoV-2)
- Thrombomodulin-based anticoagulant development
- Glycopolymer-functionalized nanomaterials for biomedical applications
- Advanced techniques for glycosylation profiling and high-throughput screening
Dr. Sun advises multiple graduate students including Isaac Turan, Majdi A Aljohani, and Reza Sahebjam-Atabaki. Research funding includes:
- NIH RO1 and R15 grants
- American Heart Association (AHA) research grant
- National Science Foundation (NSF) grant
- CSU Startup Fund and Internal Grants
The Sun Lab currently includes:
- 1 Visiting Scholar (Dr. Horoaki Sasaki)
- 3 PhD students
- 2 Undergraduate researchers
