Kailash Gulshan

Dr. Kailash Gulshan is an Assistant Professor at Cleveland State University's College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Biological, Geological and Environmental Sciences, and a member of the Center for Gene Regulation in Health and Disease (GRHD). His research laboratory is located in SI 310 at the Science and Research Building.

Dr. Gulshan's research focuses on understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying cardiovascular disease, particularly the role of signaling lipid Phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate (PIP2) and Gasdermin D (GsdmD) in atherosclerosis, lung cancer, and obesity-induced inflammation. His work investigates how PIP2 translocation affects inflammasome activation and IL-1β release, and how these processes impact reverse cholesterol transport and cardiovascular disease development.

His laboratory employs cutting-edge technologies including CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing, bone-marrow transplants, anti-sense oligonucleotides, lipid-protein interaction analysis via mass spectrometry, RNA sequencing, and single-cell sequencing. Current research is funded by NIH, American Heart Association, and Case Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Dr. Gulshan's publications reveal a consistent research trajectory exploring connections between lipid metabolism, inflammation pathways, and disease progression. His most recent work (2023) demonstrates how Gasdermin D promotes lung cancer progression and how Impavido can reduce atherosclerosis while altering gut microbiota.

Dr. Gulshan actively mentors several doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows in his laboratory, fostering the next generation of cardiovascular researchers. His lab team includes postdoctoral fellows C. Alicia Traughber and Ashutosh Prince, PhD candidates Mariam R Khan, Kalash Neupanne, Nilam Bhandari, and Kara Timinski, and lab manager Esther Opoku.
