Roman V. Kondratov is a Professor and Associate Vice President for Research at Cleveland State University, leading the Kondratov Laboratory within the Center for Gene Regulation in Health and Disease (GRHD). His research establishes critical links between circadian biology and aging mechanisms.
Research Focus: Dr. Kondratov pioneered the discovery that BMAL1 deficiency causes accelerated aging in mice (9 vs. 28-month lifespan), manifesting as sarcopenia, osteoporosis, and cataracts. His current work investigates circadian-metabolic crosstalk through mTOR, Sirtuin, and IGF/IGFR pathways, dietary restriction timing effects, and circadian-stem cell interactions in osteoporosis. His lab employs genetic models and molecular techniques to dissect aging mechanisms.
Publication Trends: Recent work (2016-2021) reveals how caloric restriction reprograms diurnal metabolism, with time-of-day-dependent effects on glucose homeostasis, acetyl-CoA metabolism, and mTOR signaling. His research demonstrates that functional circadian clocks are essential for dietary restriction's lifespan-extending effects.
Advising and Lab: Dr. Kondratov mentors active trainees including Oghogho Patrick Ebeigbe, Artem Astafev, and Jonathan Fritz. Alumni such as Rohini Khapre (Cleveland Clinic) and Sonal Patel (Research Scientist) have advanced to prominent research roles. His lab operates in the Science and Research Building (SR 270/PH 210), focusing on circadian regulation of aging and metabolism.
