Dr Xiaxia Yang serves as a Research Associate in Chinese Migration at the Lau China Institute, King's College London, within the School of Global Affairs under the Faculty of Social Science & Public Policy since 2021.
She holds a PhD in Geography from the University of Washington, where her dissertation analyzed China's age-selective internal migration system that permits working-age adults to relocate while excluding child and elderly dependents.
Her research spans critical socio-spatial dynamics in contemporary China:
- Social Demography
- Migration and Mobility
- Urbanization and Urban-Rural Dual System in China
- Spatial Politics of Labor
- Central-Local Relationship of China
Current work examines systemic disadvantages faced by Chinese migrants stemming from selective migration policies and structural inequalities. She actively engages with community issues through academic events including panel discussions on educational inequality and film screenings addressing rural left-behind children.
