Xiaoyang Xu is a Professor in the Department of Chemical & Materials Engineering at New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT). He holds a Ph.D. in Material Chemistry from Northwestern University (2010) and completed postdoctoral training at Harvard Medical School (nanomedicine) and MIT (Chemical Engineering), both concluded in 2014. His research focuses on nanotechnology-driven solutions for biomedical challenges, emphasizing mRNA/siRNA delivery systems, targeted drug delivery, and biomaterial-based therapies for diseases like cancer, fibrosis, and metabolic disorders.
Key research interests include lipid nanoparticle (LNP) engineering for mRNA vaccines, hydrogel-based tissue engineering, and overcoming biological barriers (e.g., blood-brain barrier) for therapeutic delivery. His lab develops nanomedicines targeting liver, lung, brain, and vascular pathologies, with recent work addressing metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis, pulmonary fibrosis, and atherosclerosis.
Publications span 20+ years of innovation, emphasizing translational nanomedicine. His work integrates chemistry, engineering, and biology to create next-generation therapies. The NHBLab (https://research.njit.edu/nhblab/) is a hub for interdisciplinary research in drug delivery and regenerative medicine.
