Xiaohua Li is an Assistant Professor in Separation Technologies at the University of Groningen, affiliated with the Faculty of Science and Engineering and the Products and Processes for Biotechnology department (ENTE Goningen Institute). She holds a Tenure Track position starting July 2024, focusing on teaching and research in chemical processes and sustainable technologies. Her research integrates separation technologies, metal recycling, and AI-driven process optimization.
Education: MSc (Chemical Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences, 2010), PhD (Chemical Engineering, University of Twente, 2017), and MSc (Artificial Intelligence, KU Leuven, 2023). Prior roles include postdoctoral researcher at KU Leuven (2016–2024), where she led FWO-funded projects on ionic liquid-based metal recovery systems.
Research interests emphasize solvent extraction, metal recovery from batteries/magnets, sustainable process design, and AI applications in chemical process control. Current projects include the TKI-funded ReLIB initiative (2025–2026) for lithium recycling and pigment recovery collaborations with Holland Colours.
Teaching responsibilities include courses on Special Process Equipment for BSc students and Advanced Separation Methods for Engineering Doctorate programs. She actively mentors MSc/BSc students in separation science and sustainable technologies.
