Dr Xiaofei Qi is an Associate Professor in the School of Education at Durham University and a Fellow of the Wolfson Research Institute for Health and Wellbeing. Her research focuses on early childhood education, digital learning, and child development, with a particular emphasis on the interplay between preschool experiences, home environments, and long-term cognitive/emotional outcomes. She leads and collaborates on major educational trials such as the EYCP efficacy trial and TWiTCH pilot study, funded by the EEF-DfE.
Her academic career includes prior roles at the University of Cambridge’s Education Reform and Innovation team and the Cambridge Psychometrics Centre, where she developed adaptive testing systems for Eton College. Dr Qi holds a PhD in Psychology from Birkbeck, University of London, and has contributed to policy-relevant reports like A country that works for all children and Childcare should not be a luxury.
Research interests span assessment methodologies, digital technologies in education, and parenting practices. She has supervised doctoral students in areas like digital creativity and early years interventions. Key esteem indicators include her editorial role at the Review of Education (2020) and leadership in large-scale educational evaluations.
Current projects include evaluating the Maths Champions numeracy program and exploring language development strategies in early years settings. She teaches undergraduate/postgraduate courses on educational assessment and child development while contributing to interdisciplinary collaborations on digital futures and child well-being.
