Xiaochun Susan Zhang, MD, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pathology at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and serves as Director of Clinical Immunology at the Core Lab of University Hospitals. She obtained her MD from TongJi Medical University (China) and a PhD in Neuroscience from the University of Wyoming. Her postdoctoral training included cardiovascular disease research at the University of North Dakota and neuroscience at the University of Wyoming's School of Pharmacy.
Dr. Zhang specializes in diagnostic immunology, clinical chemistry, and novel biomarker development. Her research focuses on improving clinical assays and validating diagnostic tools for conditions like renal cell carcinoma, thrombotic disorders, and prosthetic infections. Notable achievements include the Charles S. Neer Award (2015) and the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons Best Abstract Award (2013).
Her work spans multi-institutional collaborations (e.g., renal carcinoma studies) and laboratory innovations (e.g., HPLC methods for vitamin B1 assessment). She has held roles at the Cleveland Clinic Pathology Institute and currently oversees clinical testing and biomarker analysis at University Hospitals.
Key areas of impact include cytokine profiling for joint infections, ADAMTS13 assays for thrombotic disorders, and ERG/P63 staining for prostate cancer diagnosis. Her academic contributions span over 30 peer-reviewed publications since 2003, reflecting expertise in both clinical diagnostics and basic neuroscience.
