Xuchen Zhang, MD, PhD, is a Professor of Pathology at Yale School of Medicine, specializing in gastrointestinal and liver pathology. As Director of Gastrointestinal and Liver Pathology, he leads diagnostic and research efforts in liver/gastrointestinal malignancies and inflammatory conditions. His clinical expertise includes liver transplant pathology, lung injury mechanisms, and molecular classification of tumors like colorectal and liver cancers.
Dr. Zhang holds appointments in multiple Yale centers, including the Cancer Signaling Networks and Pancreatic Diseases Program. He earned his MD from Chengde Medical College (1988), MS from Beijing University of Chinese Medicine (1994), and PhD from Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences (2000). Postdoctoral training included residencies at SUNY Downstate and a fellowship at Mount Sinai.
His research focuses on molecular mechanisms of lung aging, liver fibrosis, and tumor microenvironments. Notable contributions include studies on steatohepatitic hepatocellular carcinoma, mycobacterial pseudotumors, and AI-driven pathology assessment. Dr. Zhang has received awards such as the Averill Liebow Award (2013) and Young Investigator Award (2011).
Recent publications (2023-2025) highlight work on colorectal carcinoma variants, AI in liver assessment, and inflammatory pathways in liver disease. He collaborates with investigators across disciplines, advancing precision medicine approaches in oncologic pathology.
