Xiao Lin is an Associate Professor (with Tenure) and holds the Robert F. Corroon Chair at the Maurice R. Greenberg School of Risk Management, Insurance & Actuarial Science within the Peter J. Tobin College of Business at St. John’s University. Her academic journey includes a PhD in Actuarial Science, Risk Management and Insurance from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a BA in Economics and BS in Statistics from Peking University.
Her research focuses on catastrophe risk management, climate risk, earthquake insurance, and predictive modeling. Notable projects include analyzing racial disparities in earthquake insurance claims adjudication, climate risk disclosure frameworks for insurers, and discount rate methodologies in the insurance industry. She teaches courses in risk management, actuarial science, and mathematical statistics.
Lin has published in top-tier journals such as Journal of Risk and Insurance and Insurance: Mathematics and Economics, with recent work addressing climate risks in life insurers’ mortgage portfolios and sea level rise impacts. Her teaching spans both undergraduate and graduate levels, emphasizing practical applications of actuarial science and statistics.
Her academic contributions bridge theoretical actuarial frameworks with real-world challenges in disaster risk financing, regulatory compliance, and sustainable insurance product design. Current research explores innovations in parametric insurance and the behavioral economics of risk awareness.
